Mrs. Erica Dankmeijer
Maggona Boutique Cottages was founded and is lovingly managed by Erica Dankmeijer, originally from the Netherlands.
Her very first journey outside Europe took her to Sri Lanka in 1996. Many travels through Asia followed, but Sri Lanka always held a special place in her heart. In 2011, Erica turned that love into her profession by founding her own Dutch travel company, Veelzijdig Sri Lanka (“Versatile Sri Lanka”), offering tailor-made tours to this diverse and beautiful island. Together with her local partner, with whom she has been working since 2011, she has organized countless memorable journeys for her clients. With over three decades of experience in the travel industry, travel planning and creating unique experiences have always been her greatest passion.
After the COVID period, in 2023, Erica was invited by the Sri Lankan government to return to the country as part of a campaign to show that Sri Lanka was once again open to all travelers, including unvaccinated travelers. During this visit, she realized that this was where she wanted to spend more time “when she grew up,” as she jokingly put it. Once again, she fell in love with the island’s serenity, nature, and warm hospitality — especially along the west coast of Sri Lanka.
What began as a casual remark soon became reality. In October 2023, Erica was given the opportunity to lease a piece of land in the village of Maggona–Payagala, where she built a home. Shortly after, her long-held childhood dream of running a small hotel came true when she was able to lease two adjoining plots as well. Erica wanted to create a place where travelers could feel at home — something different from the large resort hotels, a small-scale property with a personal touch. That vision grew into what is now Maggona Boutique Cottages — a peaceful and welcoming boutique retreat.
On Christmas Eve, 24 December 2023, the first stone of Maggona Boutique Cottages was laid during an official Sri Lankan blessing ceremony. Construction progressed smoothly, and in February 2024, she was able to lease the rice field in front of the property. Building of the cottages began in June 2024, and after many ups and downs, Maggona Boutique Cottages officially opened on 1 October 2025.
Erica believes in small-scale hospitality, authenticity, and personal attention. She works closely with her local team to offer guests a warm, relaxed, and memorable stay. Every cottage, every garden stone, and every interior detail has been carefully chosen to reflect the natural beauty of Maggona, combined with Western comfort and quality. With her international experience and deep love for the island, Erica enjoys sharing insider tips about the area, from local markets and beaches to hidden temples and authentic Sri Lankan restaurants.
Those who stay at Maggona Boutique Cottages experience not only comfort and tranquility but also the heartfelt passion of someone who has truly fallen in love with Sri Lanka.
