Along Sri Lanka’s picturesque west coast, just a 20-minute drive from Maggona Boutique Cottages, lies the charming coastal town of Kalutara.
Kalutara – Sri Lanka
Kalutara is beautifully situated at the mouth of the Kalu Ganga River, which divides the town in two and offers breathtaking views from the iconic Kalutara Bridge. This unique setting gives the town a special charm and a relaxed atmosphere. Unlike the busier beach destinations such as Bentota or Hikkaduwa, Kalutara remains a peaceful haven—perfect for travelers seeking a blend of nature, culture, and tranquility without the crowds of larger tourist hubs.
Nature lovers can take a boat trip along the Kalu Ganga River, gliding past mangroves, tropical vegetation, and exotic birds. Further inland, lush tea plantations and rubber estates recall Sri Lanka’s colonial heritage.
Kalutara Bodhiya
One of Kalutara’s most remarkable landmarks is the Kalutara Bodhiya, an impressive white stupa located right beside the main road from Galle to Colombo, overlooking the Kalu Ganga River. At this sacred site stands a revered Bodhi tree, believed to be one of 32 saplings from the original Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura. This makes the temple one of the most venerated religious sites in Sri Lanka, attracting hundreds of Buddhist devotees and foreign visitors daily. There is no entrance fee—just remember to remove your shoes and cover your shoulders and knees out of respect.
Richmond Castle in Kalutara Sri Lanka
About three kilometers from the Kalutara Bodhiya stands Richmond Castle, an elegant mansion dating back to the early 20th century. It is a fascinating blend of European and South Asian architectural styles, incorporating Sri Lankan, Indian royal, Italian-Dutch, and Greek design influences. The castle once featured lush gardens and fruit orchards where grand banquets were held for Sri Lankan and foreign dignitaries. As the owners were unable to have children, several marble statues of babies were placed throughout the gardens as symbols of comfort. From the large front balcony, visitors can enjoy stunning views over the grounds.
Kalutara Market and Beach
For a taste of local life, don’t miss the Kalutara Market, located near the railway station. Here you’ll find fresh tropical fruits, colorful spices, handmade souvenirs, and the lively buzz of daily trade. The region is also known for its coir industry, where locals produce ropes and mats from coconut fibers—a fascinating glimpse into traditional craftsmanship.
Just five kilometers from Maggona Boutique Cottages, you’ll find the beautiful long sandy beaches of Kalutara. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxing walk, sunbathing, or watching the sky turn gold and crimson as fishing boats return to shore at sunset.
